St. John’s to host first “Greg Montalbano Classic”

The St. John’s and Westboro baseball teams will meet in the first “Greg Montalbano Classic” on Saturday, May 15 at 3 p.m. at St. John’s, in an event to honor the late pitcher who passed away last August after a long battle with cancer.

Montalbano played for St. John’s and grew up in Westboro before attending Northeastern and playing in the Red Sox minor league system and later for the Worcester Tornadoes.

The event will begin at noon with an alumni baseball game at noon, which should be worth attending just for the outstanding players these two programs have produced, and immediately prior to the varsity game there will be a ceremony to honor Greg where the school will unveil a permanent monument in his honor. Longtime St. John’s coach Bill White will emcee the event and Greg’s family will throw out the first pitch.

Members Greg’s graduating class of 1995 will also be in attendance at Pioneer Field as part of their 15th reunion ceremonies.

The game itself should be a good one, as it will pit the two teams together for the first time following a memorable 12-inning clash in last year’s Central Mass. Division 1 semifinal.
