Local sports scene loses a legend in Pete Trainor

Central Mass. lost a sports giant on Sunday when cancer took the life of Leominster’s Pete Trainor, a legendary football, basketball, baseball and softball referee and umpire.

A St. John’s High and Holy Cross College graduate, he was 66.

Inaugral Assabet Hall class announced

Assabet Valley has put together its first Athletic Hall of Fame class, honoring 16 athletes and an athletic director.

The seventeen honorees include: David Brown, Michael Pascal, Cherene Teterault, Leo Charbonneau, Scott Lutke, Paul Lipka, Doreen Lorraine, Sharon Tervo, Kim Fox, Cindy Maccoldi, Lynn Cuddy, Susan Perry, Rob Tunnera, Tina Cardinale, Pat Donahue and Patricia Richardson.

The group will be honored on Friday, September 26 at Hudson Elks in Hudson. A cocktail hour is set for 6 p.m., with dinner to follow at 7. Tickets for the induction dinner and ceremony are $25 per person. Tickets can be purchased by contacting Assabet Valley athletic director Terry Riley at 508 485-9430 x1412, or visit her office at Assabet.

Quabbin announces Hall class

Quabbin Regional will induct its third Hall of Fame class — five athletes and one coach — during Homecoming weekend on Oct. 17.

The honorees include: Joe Orszulak (Class of 1980), who was drafted by the Yankees and spent time in New York’s farm system before arm injuries curtailed his career and Drew Stratton (’83), who pitched at Princeton University and was drafted in the sixth round by the Oakland Athletics, playing four years in minors.
Also, Jon Panaccione (’82), a cross country runner, who won every league race for three seasons, including consecutive Wachusett and Lunenburg Invitationals; Christine “Cricket” (Hardaker) Haley (’92), among the all-time leading scorers in Quabbin field hockey history with 61 goals and 34 assists; Melissa Shamgochian (’97), who received 12 varsity letters in field hockey, basketball and softball; and Fran Cranston (’75), who coached the school’s wrestling team for 28 years, posting a winning percentage of .790.
